Lawyers' Collective to take legal action against Sri Lankan government minister

A lawyers' organization in Sri Lanka, the Lawyers Collective, plans to take legal action against a government minister for violation of election laws.

The Convener of Lawyers Collective for Democracy (CLCD), J.C. Weliamuna told local media that the organization is seeking to take legal action against Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva for violating election laws.

The Minister has allegedly sent letters to the managers of the Divi Neguma initiative in the Badulla District instructing them to gather information on Samurdhi development officers, who supported the opposition parties, UNP and JVP, according to a report in Ceylon Today.

The Minister has allegedly sent the letters before the Saturday's Uva Provincial Council polls which was a grave violation of the Law, and sufficient to unseat the candidates who were elected, the Convener of CLCD has said.

"By sending these letters the minister has violated the rights of the citizens to support any political party of their choice," he added.

The Marxist party, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) on September 19 lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission against the order sent on 11 September to gather information regarding JVP members in public institutes.

JVP in its complaint said that an order by G. Illeperuma, a coordinating officer of Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Management, had asked for a list of United National Party and JVP members in the public institutes in the Uva Province.

Weliamuna said the OIC's of police stations across the country are appointed by the IGP on the recommendations of Pradeshiya Sabha politicians and therefore it is not surprising that police failed to prevent election law violations in the two districts.

He pointed out that a large number of Defender vehicles, available only with the Defense Ministry, were used in election but no one took any action against the Defense Ministry.
