Indian Coast Guard arrests five Sri Lankan fishermen

The Indian Coast Guard has arrested five Sri Lankan fishermen along with their boat on Thursday for allegedly crossing the International Maritime Boundary Line and fishing in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) off the Chennai coast.

Indian Coast Guard (ICG) ship Sarang and its fixed wing aircraft on routine patrolling duty has spotted the Sri Lankan fishermen on board a fishing boat some 80 nautical miles off Mamallapuram of Tamil Nadu at 7.30 pm on September 25, an ICG release has said.

According to the ICG release the boat had 1,000 kilos of tuna fish illegally caught from the Indian EEZ.

The fishermen have been handed over to Tamil Nadu Police today for illegally fishing in Indian waters, violating the Maritime Zones of India Act, 1981.

A total of 181 Sri Lankan fishermen have been arrested and 34 of their boats have been taken into custody by ICG this year alone for illegally fishing in Indian EEZ.
