Harin Fernando not to accept MP's offer to lead Youth Front

Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party (UNP) chief ministerial candidate Harin Fernando today declined to accept the Gampaha district parliamentarian Ruwan Wijewardene's offer to hand over the leadership of the UNP National Youth Front (NYF) to him.

Speaking to media at Sirikotha, Fernando said MP Wijewardene as an honest politician made a huge sacrifice by resigning from the post and offering it to him but he hands over the post back to MP Wijewardene since he wants to spend more time working with the people in his Badulla electorate.

Gampaha district parliamentarian Wijewardene yesterday decided to resign from his post of UNP National Youth Front (NYF) Chairman and offer it to Harin Fernando.

"He made a huge sacrifice when he decided to resign from the post even without informing the National Leader. He would also have to give up his membership in the Leadership Council if he resigns as NYF Chairman," Fernando said.

"I don't want to oust him. I want to allow him to continue his many programs launched through the NYF for the national election. I will work by his side and help him always," he added.

Fernando said he doesn't work for posts in the party and he, who received 88% of vote as people's Chief Minister in the Badulla district, needs to be working for them.

The UNP Chief Ministerial candidate, who topped the list of preferential votes in Badulla District with 173,933 votes, said he was the Chief Minister selected by the people in their hearts and minds though he may not be the Chief Minister on paper.
