Sixteen suspects including the father of the four-year-old boy Dinidu Yashen, who was rescued after being abducted in July, have been remanded until September 30 on charges of attacking and damaging the vehicles of the attorneys representing the alleged kidnappers.
The case lodged regarding the attack carried out by the angry mob on August 20 was taken up at the Galgamuwa Magistrate’s Court today.
A team of attorneys including the President of the Sri Lanka Bar Association, Upul Jayasuriya, were also present at the court when the case was taken up before Magistrate Ruwan Dammika Dissanayake.
Speaking to reporters outside the court premises, Jayasuriya said that the Bar Association of Sri Lanka strongly opposes the attack and damaging of vehicles belonging to attorneys of the Galgamuwa Bar Association.
A large number of residents of Meegalewa area held a demonstration on August 20 in front of the Galgamuwa Courts complex, demanding strict legal action against those who were apprehended in connection with the kidnapping of the four-year old child.
The protesters chanted slogans and demanded that the four suspects should be given a maximum penalty while several o them had attacked the vehicles of the lawyers representing the accused.
Dinidu Yashen’s father was among 16 suspects arrested over the attack.
Yashen was abducted on July 28 and was later rescued by a police team attached to the CID led by a SSP on August 01.
