The abortion centre was raided after a search warrant was obtained from the Dambulla Magistrate, last evening.
A woman police officer who acted as a decoy helped to nab the suspect, a police source added. The suspected doctor has been identified as a resident of Thamankaduwa, Gallewa. He will be produced before the Dambulla Magistrate’s Court, today.
A study indicated that about 125,000 to 175,000 induced abortions are performed annually in Sri Lanka. In recent decades much interest has been focused on the rising number of induced abortions. However, reliable estimates of the incidence of abortions are not available as it is illegal to carry out.
