The present ruling United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government, especially the President, Mahinda Rajapaksa is now electorally vulnerable as evident by yesterday's provincial election results, the main opposition party of Sri Lanka, the United national Party (UNP) said.
"The time has come for the Rajapaksa regime to start packing its bags. Their reign of terror and corruption is nearing its end," the UNP said in a statement on Sunday.
The UNP said the march towards the ultimate defeat of the "dictatorial Rajapakse regime" has begun in the Uva Province.
"The election results from the Uva Provincial poll is a rejection of the regime's policies of enriching a few while mere crumbs are thrown at the masses. This is no longer an acceptable mantra of governance," it said.
The opposition party made a massive gain at Saturday's election for the Province when compared to what the party received at the 2009 election.
The UNP more than doubled its votes in the Province winning 274,773 votes at yesterday's election as opposed to the 129,144 it got at the 2009 election.
The party secured 13 seats, 6 more than the 7 seats it won in 2009.
"The people have had enough of this Government's lies. They have had enough of its corruption. They are tired of its nepotism and self-serving rule. The people have rejected the lawlessness and impunity perpetrated by the incumbent regime. The time has come for the Rajapaksa regime to start packing its bags. Their reign of terror and corruption is nearing its end," the UNP said in its statement.
The party credited its gains to the chief ministerial candidate Harin Fernando for "going up against the might of President Mahinda Rajapaksa."
The UNP charged that the government has pressured the local electronic media not to publish the comparison between the 2009 and the present Uva Provincial Council election results.
The main opposition party challenged the government to hold Presidential election as planned and "face the truth about the chaos and misery that the Rajapaksa rule has brought upon the people."
The UNP urged "all forces opposing Rajapaksa rule to unite in order to deliver the people from this family curse."
