New WHO reports ranks Sri Lanka fourth on suicide rates

A new WHO report has placed Sri Lanka fourth among 172 countries in suicides with 28.8 deaths for every 100,000 people, far above the global average of 11.4 per 100,000.

Commenting on the landmark report capping a decade of research WHO Chief Margaret Chan said it is estimated that over 800,000 people die each year by suicide. WHO cautioned that suicide figures are often sketchy, with less than half of those nations keeping clear tallies.

WHO noted that suicide victims are often from marginalised groups of the population – many of them poor and vulnerable to a string of pressures.
