A BJP law-maker in Gujarat's Saurashtra region has been caught on camera beating a youth. The youth reportedly had an argument with the security staff of Kanti Amrutya, the MLA from Morbi, on Monday morning after which the politician, who was touring the area, joined in and started beating the youth with a stick.

MP Senanayake defected to UNP United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) Gampaha District Parliamentarian Wasantha Senanayake today defected to the United National Party (UNP). Senanayake too participated a press conference held at the UNP Headquarters in Sirikotha, this afternoon. This came after President Mahinda Rajapaksa signed the proclamation declaring his intention to hold a Presidential election seeking another term. Senanayake said that he shifted to the main opposition in a bid to bring back good governance and change the draconian powers of the executive presidency. Senanayake said that some other ruling party members would too quit the UPFA.
‘Kalu Chootiya’ shot dead during escape attempt
A suspect involved in several major crimes including murders has been shot and killed by police this morning.
Police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said that police officers opened fire at Hiran Dharshana, also known as “Kalu Chootiya,” when he had attempted to flee from custody.
The suspect was reportedly arrested by the Mirihana Police special crimes unit and being escorted when he had attempted to escape, prompting police to open fire. He was killed on the spot.

SLHRC to question Examinations Commissioner
The Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission has taken steps to question the Commissioner of Examinations about the complaints put forward by professors and university lecturers regarding this year’s Advanced Level Economics paper.
Head of the SLHRC, Attorney-at-Law Nimal Punchihewa said that accordingly, the Commissioner of Examinations is to present a report on the matter to the Commission.
He said that further steps in connection to the matter will be taken after reviewing the report. The Commission commenced investigations into the issues pertaining to the Advanced Level Economics paper after various complaints were put forward by the All Island Teachers’ Association.
